One of the major challenges in understanding business process modeling is that it is used at levels with very different details and purposes. When looking for a business process, it is important to first ask yourself what level of detail is involved. As long as there is no defined standard for  business process modeling levels , levels usually go from high level (low detail) to specific level (high detail).

For example, business process modeling may be used to describe the high-level structure of a large company. The rectangles in this case may represent whole groups such as R&D, production or supply chain. Such models are often performed by organizational architects, those who design the organization's processes and technology on a large scale. Such models must have organizational focus and be relevant to the level of process summary. As shown in the figure below. Level 1 describes the highest level of business scenarios. These models include a wide range of processes that describe the core function of the company, such as marketing, demand management, or product design. This level of modeling is usually descriptive.

Business process modeling may also be used to describe the details of a business process . These models can be at a high level, such as describing all the steps of cash processing, or at a very precise level, such as all the steps needed to assess a potential buyer's credibility. We say that these models focus on the process and relate to levels 2 and 3 of the process summary.

Level 2 is the level of the process that describes the steps of performing some complex activities. A process has a relatively large scope that includes many activities. Demand estimation, which ensures that existing products are purchased, is a good example of a Level 2 process, which may be part of the demand management scenario. This level of the process and all the levels below it can be descriptive or executive.

Level 3 is the level of activity in which the steps of level 2 activities are described in detail. An activity is a set of separate units of work performed by several people. Supplier relationship management may be one of the activities in the demand management process.

Modeling may be used to describe tasks at different levels of detail to automate processes. The task-focused model can have many levels of detail depending on the complexity of the tasks. Level 4 models describe the specific actions that must be taken to perform the task. Tasks are independent activities that can be performed by a person as a unit of work. Creating a sales contract can be a daunting task for suppliers.

These surfaces are somewhat arbitrary and there are many gray areas between them. Each level can contain different levels of detail. But these levels are useful for describing task modeling when creating a business process model. The method of business process modeling separating sensitive subsets is useful for managing large-scale design activities because the workload can be clearly assigned to a group of experts on a subject.
