If we succeed, then, using classifications as a guide, anyone will be able to ask and answer questions that clarify the purpose of each BPM technology being evaluated. For many forms of technology, this is a simple task. In the world of BPM , both the purpose and the function of technology overlap in an annoying way.

Most BPM technologies start by allowing people to use it to describe a business process model . As we know from our previous analysis, this business process model may describe how a company's departments interact, or it may explain how a group generates a purchase order. The use of different technologies for different areas of modeling is not uncommon.

Once a business model is created, it can be used for automated assembly or to create applications that can help run business processes.

There is a difference between the two methods of using BPM technology , which identifies the following two main categories:

  • Technology is used to describe the business process to express the structure of business processes.
  • Business process automation technology allows business process -based applications to be developed based on process descriptions.

While separating BPM technology into these two categories is a good start, there are four other dimensions that can help clarify the purpose of a particular technology.

Models: The key to understanding

By focusing on the purpose, level of detail, and type of orchestration of the models used in BPM technology , we can easily categorize what that technology is used for. This method works even when a BPM technology solution incorporates a complex set of technologies for different needs.

Here are the basic terms of technology. The first two dimensions have already been covered in the section " What is business process modeling ?"

Target. The purpose of the model is to consider the type of knowledge being monitored and the way the model refers to its use. 2 target categories often describe models:

  • Descriptive models that are used to describe the purpose and nature of processes as a way to communicate ideas between people.
  • Execution models used to describe the process and automate the collection of solutions.

Descriptive models are not necessarily practical. All executive models are descriptive, although some types of executive models focus more on detail than communication simplification.

Focus level. The level of focus of the model described earlier indicates what activities and objects are described in the model. The focus of modeling on BPM technologies varies widely and is divided into the following categories:

  • Organizational focus models are used by organizational architects to model the top-level structure of the company. Items in the organizational model may include large-scale concepts such as payroll processing, financing, employment, or a more detailed structure such as the organizational chart for departments.
  • The process focuses on the tasks or process steps that must be performed for certain business activities.
  • Work-focused models are models that focus on describing structure, logic flow, and algorithms and are related to specific tasks.

Orchestration. The third dimension is related to the type of orchestration described by the model. Business process models, especially executive models, tend to describe the orchestration of different components at different levels of business process planning. It is possible for a particular technology to perform orchestration on more than one level. By keeping these levels in mind, it is possible to avoid confusion about how a particular technology works.

  • Display streams include the interaction between the user and various components of the user interface and other components of the application.
  • Services orchestration in the application middleware layer is a kind of coordination that occurs when a process coordinates the activities of a set of web services. Many BPM technology solutions fall into this category.
  • Human workflow involves the orchestration of the process that you see within a web service or within an enterprise application.
  • The data stream encompasses the types of orchestrations that occur in the database layer through mechanisms such as database drivers. This is not typically the focus of BPM technology .

These three dimensions, purpose, level of focus, and orchestration, create a scattered matrix that can be used to describe , and quickly compare each BPM technology in a useful way. Matrices are scattered because there are certain combinations that do not make sense (such as descriptive models and level 4 or higher in the technology domain), or have not yet been considered by the developer.

When faced with a new BPM technology , if you ask the following questions about model and focus, it can avoid confusion and enable a quick understanding of what the technology is designed for.

  • Is this technology used to describe the process or to automate the process?
  • What is the focus level of the models: organizational, process or tasks?
  • What level of orchestration can be done by this technology?

Note that the question about the level of focus can be asked both to describe the process and to automate the process . The question about orchestration is only related to process automation technology.

With these dimensions, it is possible to describe different types of BPM technologies available with a higher degree of accuracy and clarity. Table 1 shows how the specific technologies we will describe fit the dimensions used to describe business process models .
